Originally from Connecticut, Helen holds a Bachelor of Science degree in nursing from Salve Regina University, Master of Science in nursing from Wichita State University, and a Ph.D. in Human Services from Walden University.
Helen had multiple careers, including one in the Navy Nurse Corps, at hospitals from Connecticut to Kansas, and in education systems as a teacher and administrator.
Although she decided to retire in Bluffton, her work has never stopped. For six years, she served as principal of Hilton Head High School. In 2008, she became the leading force for John Paul II Catholic School.
Ryan has been involved with numerous boards including the Arts Center of Coastal Carolina, Island School Council for Arts, Rotary Club of Hilton Head Island, salve Regina University, Technical College of the Lowcountry, and The Volunteers in Medicine Clinic.
She is a Rotarian and avid flyfisherman. She attends St. Francis by the Sea Church in Hilton Head.
